Which protein powder is suitable for me?

Proteins are one of the essential substances in the body for everyone, contributing to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass and muscle strength. The choice of how we intake proteins varies for each individual. Some prefer natural or animal-based products such as peas, cottage cheese, goat milk, cottage cheese, or hemp seeds, while others prefer to consume their proteins in the form of protein shakes.

Purchasing proteins is quite simple. You can order from House of Nutrition, but nowadays, you can also buy them directly in the store. But what exactly is in those large containers? What makes one protein shake better than another? And which protein powder suits your training goals? In this article, we assist you in finding your ideal protein powder!

HOW IS PROTEIN POWDER MADE?

The most well-known form of protein powder is whey, sometimes called whey protein or whey isolate. Whey is nothing more than a byproduct remaining from cheese production. When making cheese, milk is curdled, and a byproduct called whey is released, which is the main ingredient in protein shakes. When the whey liquid is eventually extracted, it turns into (whey) powder.

It is crucial to purify and filter the whey, removing milk sugars (lactose) and any fats. This is done by passing it through various filtration processes (both ultra and cross filters), without heating the milk anywhere in the process. This is called a ‘cold filter process’. The more the whey is filtered, the purer the whey protein becomes. After about nine rounds of filtration, the whey protein has an 80% protein percentage (this grade is called WPC). After an additional three rounds of filtering, you reach a protein percentage of 90% (this grade is called WPI) and contains hardly any milk sugars (lactose).

As a final step, manufacturers often add extra ingredients for taste and aroma, such as sweeteners.

WHY USE PROTEIN POWDER?

During intense workouts, our muscles are strained. If the strain on the muscles is significant enough (overload), tiny muscle tears can occur. Our body responds to this and ensures that these tears are repaired during rest periods. Existing fibers are restored, and new muscle fibers are even created. Proteins aid in this process, assisting in the maintenance, repair, and growth of muscles. Protein powder is a highly concentrated form that the body can easily absorb. Unlike, for example, chocolate milk, protein powder contains few unnecessary calories, fats, and carbohydrates. Additionally, you can easily take a protein shake with you and create endless variations. Below are the benefits of whey protein:

  • Fat loss and muscle preservation
  • Reduces appetite
  • Promotes muscle recovery and growth
  • Provides the right macros (unlike chocolate milk, which contains a lot of sugars, fats, and calories)
  • Improves immunity

Proteins play a crucial role in building and repairing muscles after intense workouts. They are essential for a balanced diet and can help you achieve your fitness goals faster. Whether you are a professional athlete or just a fitness enthusiast, adding an adequate amount of proteins to your diet is a smart choice.

WHY CHOOSE OUR PROTEINS?

Our proteins are carefully selected and of the highest quality. They come in various forms, including powders, bars, and shakes, allowing you to choose what suits you best. Whether you prefer whey protein, soy protein, or plant-based protein, we offer a wide range of flavors and brands to meet your needs.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PROTEIN POWDER?

Before making a choice, we advise you to consider your goal, budget, and taste preference. These three criteria will help you make a decision, with the first criterion, your goal, being the most important.

Various types of protein powders are available, each with their specific characteristics and sources. Here are some of the most common types of protein powders:

Whey Protein: This is one of the most popular protein supplements, derived from milk. Whey protein is quickly absorbed by the body, making it ideal for post-workout recovery. It comes in three forms: whey protein isolate (high protein content with less fat and carbohydrates), whey protein concentrate (slightly lower protein concentration with slightly more fat and carbohydrates), and whey protein hydrolysate (broken protein particles for faster absorption).

Casein Protein: Also derived from milk, but unlike whey, casein protein is digested slowly. Therefore, it offers a gradual release of amino acids, making it useful for bedtime meals or longer periods without food intake.

Soy Protein: This is a plant-based protein source obtained from soybeans. Soy protein is a complete protein source, meaning it contains all essential amino acids. It is a popular choice for vegans and people with lactose intolerance.

Pea Protein: Another plant-based protein powder made from yellow peas. It also contains all essential amino acids and is often free from common allergens such as dairy and gluten.

Rice Protein: A hypoallergenic and gluten-free protein source derived from rice. Although it does not contain all essential amino acids, it can provide a balanced amino acid profile when combined with other protein sources.

Hemp Seed Protein: This plant-based protein is made from hemp seeds and contains omega-3 fatty acids, fibers, and minerals in addition to proteins.

Blend of Protein Powders: Sometimes, protein powders are combined to provide a more extensive amino acid profile. For example, a blend of pea, rice, and hemp seed protein can offer a complete amino acid profile similar to animal proteins.

The right protein powder for you depends on your diet, goals, and any food allergies or intolerances. At House of Nutrition, we offer numerous protein supplements. These proteins consist of the highest quality ingredients to help you efficiently and effectively achieve your goals.
